West Georgia Mascot History
Name-less to an Alpha Wolf

Wolfie in the Gym
UWG’s mascot “Wolfie” has been in hibernation for the past two years, but is ready for an uproar in West Georgia’s sports and activities! To go along with this seasons new coach, Wolfie wanted to feel more like a part of the football family so this year Wolfie dons the team’s jersey! While getting the crowd more involved in our games, Wolfie is indeed starting off this season like a champ!

Wolfie is without a doubt UWG’s biggest fan! He shows his support at many of the sports here at the University of West Georgia including baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, golf, soccer, volleyball, and softball games! When Wolfie isn’t out hunting with the wolf pack you can find him out in the community showing off his wolf spirit. He participates in numerous events on and off campus and is available upon request!

Wolfie keeps his body in tip top shape by working out in his spare time. “Ever noticed my muscles” he adds. Wolfie just loves to flirt with the girls and get his picture taken. He was even giving autographs at the last football game. Wolfie also has been known to tangle with other mascots at the football games – boy is that entertaining!

If you are at a Wolves sporting event, there’s a chance you’ll see this intimidating wolf! Make sure to stop him and ask for an autograph or a photo!

History

The University of West Georgia was originally founded as the Fourth District Agricultural and Mechanical School in Carrollton, Georgia in 1906. During this time the school had no mascot until 1933 when the “Braves” became the University’s’ mascot. In 1996, the school became State University of West Georgia and then dropped "State" from its name in 2005. In 2006, during the NCAA Indian Mascots scandal West Georgia changed its athletic nickname to the "Wolves" due to NCAA restrictions and guidelines.

The “Name the Wolf Mascot” campaign ran online in October 2006. The final choice was announced at the first home men’s basketball game on Nov. 21, 2006. The big, blue mascot had been casually called Wolfie throughout the semester by Wolves fans and some of the younger members of the Junior Wolves Club. The mascot’s popularity blossomed with UWG students and children as it made celebrity appearances at sporting and other campus events.
